The G17L was intended as a competition version of the G17, but due to rule changes, since its introduction, it’s not legal for use in the production divisions of either IDPA or USPSA. The G34 has for all intents and purposes replaced the G17L as the competition legal version.

Due to its increased sight radius, higher muzzle velocity, and reduced muzzle flip / jump, the G17L is used by some specialized military and law enforcement units.
