I have received many calls recently asking me to explain what is needed to buy a gun online. So I thought it might be time for a post on the topic.

If you want to buy a gun from an online retailer, go ahead. It is much like buying a book from amazon.com. For example, you go to www.budsgunshop.com, ⇒ find the gun you would like to buy, press the “BUY NOW” or “ADD TO CART” button, press the “CHECKOUT” button, sign in or register an account, complete the transaction.

During the checkout process, they will ask you what FFL you want to use to transfer the gun. Sometimes this step will come via email after you have checked out. When it comes up, tell them you would like to use Classic American Gunsmith (434-989-1263 / [email protected]).

If you are told during the checkout process, or by email afterward, that the buyer is responsible for making sure that your FFL sends the seller a copy of their FFL. To do this, simply send us an email that includes the seller’s email address, your name, your telephone number, description(s) of the gun(s) you are having transferred, and any identification numbers (auction number, item number, invoice number, etc.) that will identify the gun(s) being transferred to the seller.

Once you have completed the transaction with the seller and sent us the email described above you are good to go. You will receive an email from us letting you know that the paperwork for your transfer has been sent. When we receive your gun(s) in the shop, we will contact you to let you know.

Then you come into the shop with your Virginia driver’s license and five dollars cash (it is $6 in you pay by card) per gun. You fill out the federal and state paperwork. We run you through the computer, and as soon as it is approved you can take your gun(s) home with you.

UPDATE: The section of Old Lynchburg Road from the shop driveway to the bridge (between our driveway and RRPC) is closed today. You can reach the shop from I-64 on Old Lynchburg Road . You cannot reach the shop on Old Lynchburg Road coming north from Plank Road or Read Hill Road.

Our apologies for the inconvenience and confusion. We received no notice from VDOT regarding the closures. When we did finally pry information out of VDOT, it turned out to be incorrect.

VDOT has closed a section of Old Lynchburg Road today (until 5 pm) and tomorrow (9am-5pm). The section of Old Lynchburg Rd that is closed runs from Dudley Mountain Road towards Charlottesville for about a mile, It is my understanding that they are working on a culvert. This was done, as far as anyone I have spoken to, without any warning.

The shop is open. However, if you are coming from the north, you cannot use Old Lynchburg Road to reach the shop. You will need to access Red Hill Road via Route 20 or Route 29, and then come up Old Lynchburg Road from the south.

So the gunsmith may attend an additional gun manufacturer’s certification course, the shop will be closed Tuesday, 10 May 2016 through Saturday, 14 May 2016. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

True story. Two gentlemen walked in the shop awhile back. I asked them, “how can I help you?”

One of them responded, “We have a general rule. We cannot drive past a gunsmithing shop sign without stopping in to see what’s going on.”

I smiled and responded, “I think I am going to get along with you boys just fine.”

To date, that’s the best answer to that question I have ever heard.

Virginia and I made the decision that I would go back to school to become a gunsmith more than five years ago. Since then, there have been numerous times when even opening the shop seemed doubtful.

Yet as of this morning, Classic American Gunsmith has been open for one year! To many, this little business we operate in our basement may not be much of an accomplishment. To us, it is the realization of a dream. A dream made possible by our clients.

We are not saying that have not been issues. We certainly have had our fair share. We thank, from the bottom of our hearts, those stalwart souls who patiently endured our learning curves and thankfully have come back again.
