VSP Firearms VCheck System Is Down

All transfer customers wanting to come in and do paperwork need to know that the Virginia State Police Firearm VCheck system is currently down. The home page of the site (right after login) states

***ATTENTION FIREARM DEALERS – THE FBI’S SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY DOWN – ALL TRANSACTIONS WILL REMAIN IN A SUBMITTED STATUS UNTIL THE SYSTEM IS FIXED – THERE IS CURRENTLY NO TIME ESTIMATE FOR WHEN THE SYSTEM WILL BE BACK UP***

If you want to come in and do the paperwork, we will submit it at that time. As it says above, we do not have any timeframe for when it will be approved.

While it is out of our control, we apologize for any inconvenience. I will make another post when the system is restored.

GLOCK Announces Limited Production Runs for Summer 2017

This morning marks the opening of the 2017 NRA Annual Meeting in Atlanta. To mark the occasion GLOCK announced some special production runs.

The summer specials include a number of pistols and features the GLOCK community has been asking for. These include G17 Gen4 and G19 Gen4 pistols with front serrations, steel sights, and extended controls. They also include a return of the G17L and the G24, as well as the introduction of Gen4 editions of the G17C and G19C. We are also producing the G17 Gen4, G19 Gen4, G42, and G43 with factory installed night sights. In addition to these pistols, we are producing a series of pistols with Olive Drab frames: the G43; G26 in Gen3 and Gen4 models; and the G17, G19, and G34 in Gen3, Gen4, and Gen4 MOS configurations.

These pistols will be available at GLOCK dealers beginning in June 2017.

GLOCK announces a limited run of pistols for Summer 2017.

Random Knowledge: CZ75 Magazine Break

Most American pistol shooters have been trained that our magazines should drop free from the gun during magazine changes.

This prompts a common complaint among American shooters with the CZ75. When the magazine catch is depressed the mags only drop and inch or so. After the initial drop, they remain retained in the gun until removed by the shooters off hand.

The reason for this is the magazine brake. It is a small piece of slightly bowed spring steel in the magazine well that allows the magazine to drop and inch or so but does not allow it to drop free of the gun.

If you would like to change this behavior in your CZ75 check out the CZ Full Magazine Brake ⇒ from CZ Custom ⇒. Replacement of the factory magazine break with this aftermarket replacement part should allow the magazines to drop free during magazine changes.

I believe that the 75, all steel 75B Compact, 75B, 75BD, and some of the 75SA guns have the magazine break as described above. I also believe that the 75B Tactical Sport, 75 Shadow T, and the 75 Compact SDP do not have the magazine break as described above. If your experience is different, please let me know.

Random Knowledge: Trijicon Rear Sight Screws

A client came in to have a set of sights removed and replaced on a polymer semiautomatic pistol. He was replacing with Trijicon Bright & Tough Night Sights ⇒.

Thia client’s particular model requires a set screw in the rear sight. The new Trijicon sights didn’t come with the set screw. They normally don’t, but I have always just used the set screw from the sights being removed. It usually works out well. This time the set screw from the old sight didn’t fit in the new Trijicon sight.

I talked to Trijicon and all of the pistol sights requiring a set screw in the rear sight take a 5-40 x 3/16″ set screw. Good to know.

Rumor has it that Trijicon will start shipping the screw with all sights that require the set screw by mid-2017.

Random Knowledge: Novak Front Sights

A client posed the issue of his Novak cut front sight coming off at the range no matter what he uses to attach it. There was a tale of woe where several sights have been lost and each time another sight was put on the gun using a progressively more aggressive version of Loctite.

When originally asked about this, I was thinking that I would tighten the wings of the dovetail and use Loctite 609 Retaining Fluid. After I thought about it for a few minutes, I decided to call Loctite to see what they recommended.

I called Loctite’s Consumer Division and after hearing the scenario they promptly transferred me to the Industrial Division. After some discussion on the issue, the Loctite representative suggested Loctite 380 Toughened Instant Adhesive (also known as Loctite 380 Black Max). It is a rubber-toughened super glue style adhesive that is well suited to the pounding environment of a semiautomatic pistol slide.

The data available to the Loctite representative suggests that this product would hold up for a carbon steel slide with an aluminum sight as well as a carbon steel slide and a carbon steel sight. The data supports the use of a hard anodized aluminum surface but there was no data available on a blued steel surface. Unfortunately, I forgot to inquire about stainless steel. I did ask if roughing up the dovetail and sight surfaces (that cannot be seen) would increase the strength of the hold. The Loctite representative said yes it would.

If you try this product in this manner, I would be interested in hearing about your experience.
